2. What's happening under the surface?

A great paver job is all about the foundation. Ask about excavation and compaction. If they skip the dirt work to save time, that's a huge red flag, you want a base that stays level even when the ground dries out.

3. Which pavers handle the heat best?

Not all pavers are equal: some fade in UV, others get too hot for bare feet. A pro helps you pick colors and materials that stay cool and look sharp for years.

Red flags that should end the conversation

• No license or proof of insurance. In Nevada, hardscape work belongs to a licensed contractor, and unlicensed work becomes a resale and liability problem later.
• A bid with no base or compaction detail. If the estimate does not say how deep the excavation goes and how the base is compacted, they are quietly planning to cut it.
• Door-to-door, or "leftover material from a nearby job." A classic pressure setup, not a real quote.
• A large cash-only deposit. A normal deposit is fine; a big cash-only demand is not.
• Pressure to sign today. A real crew's schedule and pricing survive you sleeping on it.

What a fair paver estimate should include

A quote you can actually compare is itemized, not a single lump sum. Look for the excavation depth and base build (this is where quality lives), the specific paver product and pattern, edge restraint and joint sand, demolition and haul-off if any, drainage or grade work, cleanup, and the labor and material warranty in writing. When one bid is dramatically lower than the rest, it almost always cut the base, the part you cannot see and cannot easily fix later. Cheapest and best rarely share an estimate.
